Kendo is a modern Japanese martial art, which descended from swordsmanship and uses bamboo swords and protective armor. It is a way to discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the Katana.
Alaska Kendo Club was founded in 1983 in Anchorage by Yoshiyuki Nakanishi. Masayasu Ando (the current head instructor) moved to Anchorage in 1982 and joined the club soon after it formed. The club relocated from King Street to Denali Street, then finally to 4th Avenue in Downtown Anchorage. Our head instructor, currently 7th dan in Kendo and 5th dan in Iaido, is dedicated to sharing traditional Kendo and Iaido with the Alaska community.
Self-Improvement
